LinkBar

LinkBar Applet

Purchasing the Applet

When using the free evaluation version of LinkBar, one button that links to the consulting.com, Inc. website is displayed at all times. The purchased version of LinkBar does not display this button.

To order the purchased version of LinkBar, please visit http://www.consultcom.com and browse to the LinkBar page in our Java Software section.

Easy Setup

The easiest way to set up the LinkBar applet for your website is to use the LinkBar Master setup wizard. Just click on the LBM.exe file that you will find in this directory. This easy-to-use wizard will guide you through the setup process and create all of the HTML code for you. You will then need to place this code in the same direcory as the following four class files:

  • LinkBarTrial.class
  • BarButton.class
  • BarClock.class
  • BarItem.class
Please note that the wizard will create the APPLET tag with the CODE parameter set to "LinkBar.class". If you are using the free trial version of LinkBar, you will need to manually change this value to "LinkBarTrial.class".

If you are not comfortable using the wizard, then you you may setup the applet by starting with the code found on this page. Cut and paste this sample applet code into your own HTML page. Please make sure all of the following files are in the same directory as your html file:

  • LinkBarTrial.class
  • BarButton.class
  • BarClock.class
  • BarItem.class

After you change your HTML file you must hit 'Reload' on your browser to view the changes. You may need to close and reopen the browser to see the changes.

Once you have this sample applet working within your own page, then begin to customize the parameters for your own site.

Technical Support

If you encounter any problems setting up the LinkBar applet, please read the applet configuration Frequently Asked Questions section on our web site. Visit http://www.consultcom.com and browse to the LinkBar page in our Java Software section. The Frequently Asked Questions page lists the solutions to the most common questions that arise when setting up the applet. If your question in not answered there, then email your question to support@consultcom.com. Please be as specific as possible when describing your problem. Be sure to include your order number if it is available.

Applet Parameters

N  The number of buttons. If the value of N is 1 you will see only one button. You will then have to specify values for parameters TEXT1, URL1, IMAGE1, HINT1, STATUS1. If the value of N is 2, you have to specify the same parameters plus TEXT2, URL2, IMAGE2, HINT2, STATUS2.
TEXTx  The text on button number x. The default value is "LinkBar".
URLx  The URL for button number x. Your browser will go to this URL when you click this button. URLs may be either full or relative. Full acceptable URLs are ones which starts with http:, ftp:, mailto:, or file:. For example:

http://gsa.hypermart.net/
mailto:gsa@ut.ee

A relative URL is relative path to current html file. For example:

../webpage/index.html

The default value is http://www.consultcom.com/

IMAGEx  The image to display on button number x. This is a relative path to the image, for example: ../images/image_name.jpg. LinkBar support .GIF and .JPEG images of any size. The image will be resized to fit in the button. The default value is default.gif. (Image default.gif situated in current directory).

We recommend using jpegs, as they display much clearer than gifs. Please keep in mind that incorrectly sized graphics will be resized to fit the button, and therefore may become distorted.

HINTx  This is the text that appears over a button when the mouse is placed over that button. The default value is the button's URL.
STATUSx  Specifies the text to be displayed in the browser's status bar when the mouse is placed over button X. The default value is the value given in the HINTx parameter
BCOLOR The color for the applet background. It is recommended that this color is set to the color of the page background.

You may set the color by specifying either the name of the color, or hexadecimal color code. (This is true for all of the LinkBar color parameters.) The following color names are accepted:
  • black
  • blue
  • cyan
  • darkGray
  • gray
  • green
  • lightGray
  • magenta
  • orange
  • pink
  • red
  • white
  • yellow
  • If you would like to use a color not listed above,  you can specify the hexadecimal value for any color.

For example, the folowing will set the color to red:
    <param name=BCOLOR value="FF0000">

ButtonColor  The color of the button. When the button is pressed its color will appear darker. The clock on the right of LinkBar will appear as this darker color.
TextColor  The color of the text. It is recommended that this be set to a color contrasting with ButtonColor (for example Black/White). This is also the color of the hint text.
HintColor  The color of the hint background.
BarColor  The color of the entire LinkBar (the area between buttons).
ButtonFont  The font family for the text on each button. Set this to one of the following values.

HintFont  The font family for the hint text. It is recommended that this be set the same as ButtonFont.

    The deafult font is Dialog.

HFontSize  The size of the hint font. Recommended values are between 8 and 10.
HFontStyle  The style of the hint text. Possible values are the same as BFontStyle.
TARGET  The name of the frame where url links will open.
CLOCK  Set to either Yes or No to indicate whether you want the clock displayed. When clock is disabled you will instead see the word "LinkBar".
